Welcome! Thank you for joining me! My name is Sarah Pickett! I am a second-year journalism student at the University of Florida.
Around the Swamp: The Ultimate Guide for UF Students is a student guide for all things UF. Whether you are a freshman, transfer, graduate student or doctoral student, this guide can serve you! In the coming weeks, I will cover a variety of topics related to student life in the Swamp!
When I was a prospective student, I could not find much on the internet about student life and what it was like here in Gainesville. I didn’t get a taste for campus life until Preview, also known as new student orientation. On my way home, I was a bundle of emotions: excited, happy, tired and nervous.
Once I arrived in Gainesville at the beginning of the semester, I knew a little bit about the campus, but still felt overwhelmed. Gainesville was new to me and felt so unfamiliar.
Now, after my first year, Gainesville feels more like home than ever before. I have had a whirlwind of experiences during my first year. From living with a roommate for the first time to changing my major, I have learned so much about myself and my passions. But, I could not have survived my first year without the help of my professors, advisors, and of course, the Career Connections Center.
After I switched my major, I started flourishing; I knew I found my home! Then, I started joining organizations, building my resume and becoming acclimated to campus.
Here I am, a year later, with my foot in as many doors as possible. I’m involved in several organizations, gaining experience through internships and loving my classes.
As a result, I decided to put my passion into action and provide the ultimate guide to campus. I will end my first post with one piece of advice for anyone starting their first year at UF: Let your heart and your instinct guide you!
